You invest to build your family's future. But what happens to that future if you're suddenly not around?
India's life insurance industry collected approximately ₹8.86 lakh crore in premiums during FY 2024–25, according to government data. But paying an insurance premium doesn't necessarily mean your family has adequate protection.
The real question isn't Insurance OR Investment? It's what job should each one do?
1. Insurance Protects. Investments Grow.
| Life Insurance | Investments |
|---|---|
| Provides financial protection against loss of life | Builds wealth for future goals |
| Term insurance can offer substantial cover at relatively low cost | Wealth accumulates gradually |
| Pure term plans generally have no maturity payout | Investment value belongs to you |
| Focus: Financial security | Focus: Wealth creation |
Think about it: A ₹10 lakh investment portfolio is not a substitute for ₹1 crore of life cover if your family depends on your income.
2. Let's Put ₹60,000 a Year to Work
Imagine a 35-year-old with a 20-year financial planning horizon.
Instead of choosing only one product, consider this illustrative approach:
₹12,000/year: Term insurance premium, assuming ₹1 crore cover is available at that price.
₹48,000/year: Mutual fund SIP of ₹4,000 per month.
What could happen?
| Scenario | Potential outcome |
|---|---|
| Death during the insured term | ₹1 crore life cover, subject to policy terms |
| SIP value after 2 years at 10% annualised | ₹1.06 lakh |
| SIP value after 20 years at 8% annualised | ₹23.56 lakh |
| SIP value after 20 years at 10% annualised | ₹30.37 lakh |
Here's the difference: In year two, the investment may have grown to approximately ₹1.06 lakh, while the term policy could already provide ₹1 crore of protection.
The investment builds wealth over time. Insurance protects against the financial impact of an untimely death.
Figures are hypothetical, before taxes. SIP returns are not guaranteed. Actual term premiums depend on age, health, smoking status, coverage and underwriting. Pure term cover normally ends without a maturity benefit.
3. What About Endowment Plans and ULIPs?
Combining insurance and investment isn't necessarily wrong. But understand what you're purchasing.
Term insurance: Primarily protection, generally without a savings component.
Endowment plans: Protection with savings benefits; examine guaranteed and non-guaranteed payouts and effective returns.
ULIPs: Insurance combined with market-linked investment; understand charges, lock-in, fund risks and coverage.
Before signing, ask: How much is my actual life cover? What is my expected or guaranteed maturity value? What happens if I need money early?
4. So, Which Should You Choose?
There is no universal answer.
If your family depends on your income, adequate life protection deserves serious consideration. If you're building wealth for retirement or children's education, goal-based investments are important too.
Your ideal mix depends on your income, liabilities, dependants, existing cover, risk appetite and financial goals.
The HawkSarthi Perspective
Don't judge insurance by its returns or investments by their insurance benefits. Judge each by how well it fulfils its purpose.
